Do Travel eSIMs Include Calls? Data, Hotspot & Roaming Explained

June 10, 2026 · 4 min read · By Wyra Team

Travel eSIMs are simple once you know the rules, but a few questions come up again and again: Does it include calls? Can I share the connection? Do I need to turn on roaming? Here are the honest answers for a Wyra travel eSIM.

Does it include calls and texts?

A Wyra travel eSIM is a data plan. It doesn't come with a local phone number for traditional voice calls or SMS. That's normal for travel eSIMs — they're built for internet access.

In practice, most travelers don't miss it, because you can call and message over data:

And because the eSIM is a separate line, your regular SIM stays active — so you can still receive calls and texts on your normal number if you leave it switched on (your home carrier's roaming rates would apply to that line).

Can I use a hotspot?

Yes. You can share your eSIM's connection by hotspot (tethering) — handy for a laptop, a tablet, or a travel companion's phone. Just remember the data a tethered device uses counts against your plan the same as data used on your own phone.

Do I need to turn on Data Roaming?

This is the step that confuses people most, so let's be clear:

Yes — turn Data Roaming ON for the Wyra line. It does not mean extra charges. A travel eSIM connects to a network in another country, and phones label any "other-country" network as roaming. Switching it on simply lets the eSIM use its data. You're paying your Wyra plan, not your home carrier's roaming fees.

The trick is to turn Data Roaming on for the eSIM line specifically, and leave your home line's data off, so your normal carrier never racks up charges.

When does my data start?

You can install your eSIM before you travel — we recommend doing it at home on Wi-Fi so you're ready. Keep the line off until you arrive, then switch it on. Always check the validity window shown at purchase so you activate at the right time for your trip.

What if the QR code won't install?

Your QR doesn't expire on our side and is always in your Wyra account and your purchase email, so you can re-open and scan it again. Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi or data when installing. If it still won't go in — or your eSIM was never delivered — email support@wyraapp.com, and failed deliveries are refunded automatically.
