What Is a Travel eSIM and How Does Wyra's Work?

June 16, 2026 · 5 min read · By Wyra Team

If you've ever landed in another country and watched your phone hunt for signal — or worse, seen a roaming charge appear days later — a travel eSIM solves that. It's the simplest way to have data the moment you arrive, with no physical SIM card to swap and no surprise bills. Here's exactly what it is and how Wyra's eSIM works.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of the small plastic SIM card in your phone. Instead of popping out a tray and inserting a chip, you install a data plan as software. Your phone can hold your normal SIM and an eSIM at the same time, so you can keep your regular number while using the eSIM just for data.

A travel eSIM is one loaded with a data plan for a specific destination or region. You buy it before you go, install it, and your phone connects to a local network when you arrive — the same networks locals use, without roaming.

How Wyra's eSIM works

The whole process takes a couple of minutes and happens before you even leave home:

🌍

1. Choose your destination

Pick where you're headed on the Wyra eSIM page. We cover 193 countries on real local networks. Plans are shaped around real trips — a week away, a long stay, a quick hop.

🔒

2. Pay securely

Checkout takes seconds and is handled by Stripe. Wyra never sees or stores your card details.

📩

3. Get your QR by email

Right after payment, your eSIM QR code is emailed to your account address and saved in your Wyra account, so you can always find it again.

📶

4. Scan and land connected

Scan the QR to install (we recommend doing this at home on Wi-Fi). When you land, turn the line on, enable Data Roaming, and you're online.

Your regular SIM stays put. The eSIM is a separate line just for data. Keep receiving calls and texts on your normal number, and use the eSIM for fast, affordable internet abroad.

What you need

To use any travel eSIM, your phone has to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Most recent iPhones (XS and newer), Samsung Galaxy (S20 and newer), Google Pixel (4 and newer) and many other models qualify. Not sure about yours? Check it in seconds on our compatibility checker.

What's included — and what isn't

Wyra travel eSIMs are data plans. That means:

Why people choose an eSIM over roaming

Roaming on your home plan can be convenient, but it's often the most expensive way to get data abroad. A travel eSIM lets you pay a clear price up front for exactly the data you need, with no bill shock when you get home. We compare the options in eSIM vs Roaming vs Local SIM.
