Does Your Phone Support eSIM? A Compatibility Guide

June 12, 2026 · 4 min read · By Wyra Team

Before you buy a travel eSIM, there's one thing to confirm: your phone has to support eSIM. The good news is that most phones sold in the last several years do. Here's how to tell — and the one requirement people most often miss.

The two requirements

For a travel eSIM to work, your phone needs to be:

  1. eSIM-capable — it has the embedded SIM hardware built in.
  2. Carrier-unlocked — it isn't locked to a single carrier. A phone fully paid off and not tied to a contract is usually unlocked, but if you're not sure, ask your carrier.

Both matter. A phone can support eSIM but still refuse a new line if it's carrier-locked.

Phones that generally support eSIM

📱

iPhone

iPhone XS, XR and newer — including the SE (2022), the 16e, and the iPhone 16 and 17 families.

📱

Samsung Galaxy

Galaxy S20 and newer, recent Note, Z Flip and Z Fold models.

📱

Google Pixel

Pixel 4 and newer (in most regions).

📲

iPad

Cellular iPad models with eSIM support — great as a second connected device.

Plenty of other Android phones support eSIM too. The lists above are the most common — the surest way is to check your exact model.

How to check on your phone

iPhone

Go to Settings → General → About and scroll to look for an EID number. If there's an EID, your iPhone supports eSIM. You can also look under Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data for an "Add eSIM" option.

Android (Samsung, Pixel and others)

Open Settings → Connections / Network → SIM manager (wording varies) and look for an option to add an eSIM or add a mobile plan. If it's there, you're good.

Fastest way: use our compatibility checker — pick your brand and model and it tells you instantly whether your device works with a Wyra eSIM.

One caveat: phones from mainland China and Hong Kong

Some phone models sold specifically in mainland China and Hong Kong ship without eSIM hardware, even when the same model supports eSIM elsewhere. If you bought your phone there, check the model carefully before purchasing a plan.
